Talk Title: Captive Cousins: Hoomothya (Mike Burns), Wassaja (Carlos Montezuma), and Indian Citizenship in the Progressive Era

Description: Discover the history of two prominent Yavapai first cousins–Mike Burns and Carlos Montezuma–who were both captured as children, raised in the East, and separated from their people for long periods. Both went on to become the first U.S. citizens from Arizona, and found citizenship to be full of failings for American Indians of their time.
